Flagging a CWW article as needing translation attribution[edit]
Your opinion would be welcome at WT:CP#Flagging a CWW article as needing translation attribution. Thanks, Mathglot (talk) 00:25, 19 November 2018 (UTC)
Automatic way to keep people from posting drafts here?[edit]
This is probably just venting that won't go anywhere, but since drafts are out of scope here, yet people keep tagging drafts with {{Not English}} and posting them here for translation, it would be nice if those actions could be repelled automatically. At least logic could be added to Twinkle to hide the option. Or conditional text could be added to the template that screams "Not Here!" when used to tag a non-article. Largoplazo (talk) 22:33, 3 February 2019 (UTC)
- I added a note to the template documentation saying that it's meant for articles, not drafts. It may avert a few. You could propose changing the language on the template itself. There may also be a way to prevent a template from being applied to pages outside of mainspace, but I'd be concerned about unintended consequences. BlackcurrantTea (talk) 02:39, 4 February 2019 (UTC)
- And I added a litte sentence in the introduction...might keep 1 out of 1000 away :). Lectonar (talk) 12:40, 4 February 2019 (UTC)
- Thanks, folks.
Largoplazo (talk) 14:26, 4 February 2019 (UTC) - I just posted a note at WT:TW. Largoplazo (talk) 15:32, 4 February 2019 (UTC)

@Largoplazo and Lectonar:, is this sitation resolved or at least satisfactory? We could add an edit filter, which should catch any of these if they are still a problem. Mathglot (talk) 07:10, 18 January 2020 (UTC)
- It is at least satisfactory imho...haven't really seen drafts here for some months. Lectonar (talk) 05:25, 20 January 2020 (UTC)
- Since the end of April, only three drafts have been posted here, on 1 October, 4 November, and 31 December. None of those edits are marked by the tell-tale "(TW)" in the edit summary. So the Twinkle tweak appears to be a success. Largoplazo (talk) 13:04, 20 January 2020 (UTC)
I am going slowly through the older listed articles...[edit]

- Well try to help too, please can you detag them when you delist them as well, to try and clear both the page and the category--Jac16888 Talk 17:45, 27 August 2019 (UTC)

Pages listed here from Twinkle not showing up?[edit]
Hello. I have recently tagged two articles with Template:Rough translation, with the option to file a report for them here left checked. The articles in question: Khorol River and Lohagara Upazila, Chittagong, and the original languages seem to be Ukrainian and Bengali respectively. But why don't I see them at the bottom of this page? Interesting discussion going on about translation techniques[edit]
A collaborative translation project is underway right now at an article being translated from pt:Desdobramentos da Operação Lava Jato. The article is still very much a work in progress, but the talk page there already contains several discussion sections regarding particular questions of translation, some of which go beyond issues narrowly focused on that topic, and which might be of interested to translators more generally: please see Draft talk:Developments in Operation Car Wash. And by the way, if you have any interest in Brazil, Operation Car Wash, or translation issues, your feedback there would be very welcome. Thanks, Mathglot (talk) 21:33, 1 December 2019 (UTC)
Portuguese glossary[edit]
The Brazil Glossary has an entry for recurso. |
If you are interested in translating articles from Brazilian Portuguese, you may find the glossary at WP:Brazil-G useful. This is a specialized glossary limited in scope to politics, law, government, and criminal investigations. Thanks, Mathglot (talk) 07:27, 18 January 2020 (UTC)
Sorted by language?[edit]
Wouldn't it make much more sense to sort the articles by their original language? --CommanderWaterford (talk) 19:56, 6 May 2020 (UTC)
I don't think so. For the main section, it's fast-moving and tracking usually new articles or edits that contain untranslated text, so having a chronological log makes the most sense. For the cleanup sections, it might be a useful way to sort in some cases, so that editors can pick articles where they can refer to the source text well, but ultimately a lot of cleanup can be done without being fluent in the original language (copy-editing, additional research/citations to cross-reference information, etc.). Laogeodritt [ Talk | Contribs ] 23:08, 12 May 2020 (UTC
- @CommanderWaterford: Personally, I think it would be helpful, but perhaps as an alternate access method, if one could be devised. See also Archive_2#Categories by language, and #Pages needing cleanup after translation. Mathglot (talk) 17:00, 13 May 2020 (UTC)
New template Translation attribution shell[edit]
Introducing new template {{translation attribution shell}}: When you have an article with more than one translation in it and you have mulitple {{translated page}} templates on the Talk page, you can keep them together and boxed, or collapsed with the new template: Example:
| This page has been the subject of multiple translations from other Wikipedias. | |||||||
| |||||||
Shortcut: {{T-attrib}}. Other redirects are available; see the documentation. Mathglot (talk) 22:19, 13 June 2020 (UTC)
Is the code broken?[edit]
Recently articles are being posted to the "Pages for consideration" section with the sentence "The language of this article is {{{language}}}." When I turn to the articles in question, I see that the language is correctly displayed in the "needs translation" tag. The correct language name is also being displayed in the WP:PNT edit summaries. So it looks like the process being used to automate the tagging of the articles and the posting of notices has broken specifically in the code that adds the text to WP:PNT, causing the {{{language}}} placeholder not to be replaced with the supplied string. Examples: [1], [2], [3]. Largoplazo (talk) 14:54, 25 October 2020 (UTC)
- After discovering that the same thing was happening for rough translations and having received no feedback here, I posted an inquiry to Wikipedia talk:Twinkle and it's been dealt with. Largoplazo (talk) 13:19, 31 October 2020 (UTC)
Template:duflu merged to Template:needtrans[edit]
This was finally acted following a TfD, but the instructions here will need updating to reflect that. ~ Amory (u • t • c) 20:44, 30 November 2020 (UTC)
- @Amorymeltzer: can you have a look now, and see if there's anything missing? Also, it really shouldn't be called "needtrans", but "fix trans", or some such. The English expression "need trans[lation]" implies the functionality that template {{not english}} provides. Mathglot (talk) 21:29, 29 December 2020 (UTC)
- shrug* Seems fine to me, I guess, but I don't spend time here, so I'm not the best one to confer on. ~ Amory (u • t • c) 20:46, 3 January 2021 (UTC)
- It's broken. Now new entries for articles that need translation are reading "The original language was ...." 01:27, 2 February 2021 (UTC) — Preceding unsigned comment added by Largoplazo (talk • contribs) 01:27, 2 February 2021 (UTC)
New template: Further ill[edit]
New template {{Further ill}} is now available for use. This is a mashup of {{Further}} and {{ill}}, and allows you to provide a red "Further" link to an article which doesn't (yet) exist in en-wiki, but does in a different language:
Normal usage is at the top of a section, as with {{Further}}, when you want to highlight a missing article in English that would be a good source of further information for that section if it existed, while at the same time linking to existing articles on foreign Wikipedias, which could also be a good starting point for creating the English article.
Please leave bug reports or enhancement requests at Template talk:Further ill. Thanks, Mathglot (talk) 22:28, 29 December 2020 (UTC)

New template bug?[edit]
Did something get lost in the recent template consolidation? Entries being added to the "needs translation" section now begin "The initial language was", like the entries in the cleanup section, instead of "The language of this article is". Largoplazo (talk) 12:48, 28 January 2021 (UTC)
Hello? Largoplazo (talk) 01:26, 2 February 2021 (UTC)
- @Largoplazo: I see this change on 30 November 2020 from a merge (wasn't me). I see that you raised this discussion at the template talk page; that's the right way to go. Mathglot (talk) 21:23, 16 February 2021 (UTC)
More robust version of Needtrans[edit]
For a long time, a minority of entries contained an ISO lang code ('es', 'zh', etc.) where the language name is supposed to be, such as at Carolina la O, or Victor Balashov. This is because a user coded {{needtrans|pg=My article name|language=es}} instead of coding {{needtrans|pg=My article name|language=Spanish}}, as it's supposed to be. I've updated the template to attempt to translate the ISO code into the language name in these cases, so this should work either way. This has been tested in the sandbox and testcases page, and is now live. Please be alert for any anomalies, and ping me from Template talk:Needtrans if you see any problems related to this. Thanks, Mathglot (talk) 21:16, 16 February 2021 (UTC)

Announcing simple, new interlanguage link template 'ill fr'[edit]
There's a new, simplified interlanguage template {{ill fr}} that you can now use for linking to one French article. The new template takes one param, the article name. Examples:
{{ill fr|Brigade Charles Martel}}⟶ Brigade Charles Martel [fr]{{ill fr|Raymond Chomel}}⟶ Raymond Chomel [fr]
It's designed for only those cases where the English article name has the exact same title as the French one, so, it's useful for people's names, other names, or untranslated organization names. No fancy options, but very simple to use.
I'm finding it very handy, because it's less typing, and nothing to remember. You can view a bunch of examples at Saint-Nazaire pocket. So far, this is the only language to have the "simplified" ill template. If French is not your main language to inter-link to and you'd like to have a similar one for another language, just ask. If there's a lot of interest, I'll automate it so the new doc page can be generated automatically. Thanks, Mathglot (talk) 10:22, 21 February 2021 (UTC)
- It was a very easy conversion, so I added three more (es, de, pt) for the languages that have the most items in the cleanup categories, namely: Spanish (92 articles needing cleanup), Portuguese (51), and German (48). As of now, you can also use the following four simplified templates, as illustrated:
{{ill fr|Maurice Roland}}⟶ Maurice Roland [fr]{{ill de|Frauenkirchhof (Dresden)}}⟶ Frauenkirchhof (Dresden) [de]{{ill es|Margarita Cueto}}⟶ Margarita Cueto [es]{{ill pt|José Joaquim da Rocha}}⟶ José Joaquim da Rocha [pt]
- More upon request. (please
{{reply to}}on reply; thanks!) Mathglot (talk) 22:35, 21 February 2021 (UTC)

Proposal to move the Expand language template to Talk pages[edit]
A discussion about moving the {{Expand language}} template (and its associated templates, {{Expand French}}, {{Expand Spanish}}, and so on) from article pages to Talk pages is taking place at Wikipedia:Templates for discussion/Log/2021 April 16#Template:Expand language. Your feedback would be appreciated. Mathglot (talk) 20:16, 17 April 2021 (UTC)
Improved template documentation at Expand language and daughter templates[edit]
I've made some major upgrades to the documentation of the {{Expand language}} template, and to the daughter templates, such as {{Expand French}}, {{Expand German}}, and so on. Hope you like it. Comments and requests cheerfully accepted at Template talk:Expand language. Thanks, Mathglot (talk) 09:30, 1 May 2021 (UTC)
Restore the removed entry for OLAP cube[edit]
I had added an entry on April 28 for images from OLAP cube and it got a couple of comments as well, but the entry was removed with comment "not in our scope". Please put back the entry so we get to know what the text in the images say. I can make the image changes and upload the English version to Commons. Jay (talk) 06:47, 14 May 2021 (UTC)
- I wrote at least one of the comments. As best I can tell the graphic is an example. The important thing is the relationship between the levels. My German is not good enough to allows word-for-word translation. That's what I know about this. There is a question here for German speakers Elinruby (talk) 05:25, 15 May 2021 (UTC)
- Thanks. User:Jac16888 got the terms translated at Talk:OLAP cube#Non-English text inside images. Jay (talk) 18:45, 22 May 2021 (UTC)
Auto-removing empty dates[edit]
The process that comes through every day and sticks the current date header at the bottom of "needs translation" section: Could a step be added that replaces all instances of
- /\n=== *(January|February|March|April|May|June|July|August|September|October|November|December) \d\d? *===(\s\n)*(\n=== *(January|February|March|April|May|June|July|August|September|October|November|December) \d\d?)/
with /$2/ ? This would get rid of empty date headings. Largoplazo (talk) 02:23, 18 May 2021 (UTC)
Adding articles[edit]
Considering how many articles need to be added to this page, the instructions are not easy to follow and the whole process is crying out for automation. New articles not in English could be auto detected and added to the page by a bot. Fiddling around with templates is like a blast from the nineties. Mccapra (talk) 20:08, 26 May 2021 (UTC)
- @Mccapra:, Do you have a list of articles to add to this page? How are you finding them? Do you have a proposal to automate the procedures? Which parts of the instructions do you find unclear? Mathglot (talk) 01:09, 30 May 2021 (UTC)
- @Mathglot: hi I find pages to add here through new page patrol. There may be a reason I haven't thought of why tagging the article for translation needs to be separate from listing it on this page, but ideally when you add the tag to the article, listing here would be automatic. At the moment you have to first fetch one template to tag the article, and then fetch a second template and find the position on this page where you need to add it halfway down a lot of dense instructions. Thanks Mccapra (talk) 06:00, 30 May 2021 (UTC)
- @Mccapra:, thanks for the reply. On my over-long list of things to do, is upgrading the article template to do something to make it easier to do what you want. It wouldn't automatically list it here, but it would provide a link in expanded instructions that when you clicked it, would open an edit window at the bottom of the page, and prepopulate it with some parametrized, canned text which would do most of what you wanted. That would leave you in preview mode on the WP:PNT page, where you could scan what it was proposing, fix it up as needed, or just hit Publish if it was accurate. Mathglot (talk) 06:15, 30 May 2021 (UTC)

Adding a template *to the bottom of* the WP:PNTCU section[edit]
You know how the {{Rough translation}} template at an article, has the below-the-fold statement about:
If you have just labeled this article as needing attention, please add
{{subst:Needtrans|pg=Jean Mattéoli|languag=French}} ~~~~
Well, I've made a change so that the "WP:PNTCU" link now goes to (near) the bottom of the page, instead of making you scroll. The way that this works, is that it actually goes to the dated subheader, so in the case of the article Jean Mattéoli, it goes to WP:PNT#July 2021, and then you just have to scroll down a little bit to find the right section for Mattéoli. If nobody has created the dated section header, then it just goes to the top of that section, and you still have to scroll all the way down like you used to. (Or hit Ctrl+End or Cmd+⬇, if you use keystroke shortcuts.) Lmk if you like it, or have suggestions for improvements. The example above is live, and you can click it.
